Have you and your partner stopped being able to communicate?
Are you overcome with grief and sadness?

Are you needing someone to talk to?

About Me
I’m a counsellor with over 20 years’ experience working with individuals, couples, adolescents and families and I’m passionate about counselling work.
As a member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors, I abide by their code of ethics, have regular supervision and ongoing training.

Counsellor - I have had experience working with couples referred by the Family Court assisting them with separating and making arrangements for their children. I have been a provider of workplace counselling (Employment Assistance Programme - EAP) for workers coping with pressures of work and personal issues.

Facilitator - I have facilitated parenting programmes and a programme funded by the Ministry of Justice called ‘Parenting Through Separation’. I have delivered programmes for groups of new migrants, helping them to settle in New Zealand, non-violence programmes for perpetrators of violence and recovery/healing programmes for victims of violence.

Supervisor - I’m a supervisor and I supervise counsellors, trainee counsellors, community workers and case workers
I’m proud to be a Wellingtonian and I love living in Miramar with my husband. I have lived in Miramar over half my life and our two daughters grew up here plus now I have grandchildren growing up in Miramar.

The models I use the most are:
•           Solution Focused Brief Therapy
•           Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples
•           Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a goal orientated, strength based approach which focuses on the present and future and comes from a belief that you already have some strengths and skills to cope and move forward. Solution Focused Brief Therapy encourages you to visualise an alternative future in order to inspire hope and it helps you to focus on positive solutions and what small steps you might take towards this more hopeful future.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is concerned with strengthening the emotional connection between you and your partner. It you both to understand the negative pattern of relating which may be present and which may be causing you to distance from each other and be stuck in conflict and resentment. Emotionally Focused Therapy can help you and your partner heal past hurts, build trust and create a more secure, loving and respectful relationship. A helpful book to read is Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) examines thought processes and beliefs connected with feelings such as anxiety, depression, fear and guilt. This approach involves identifying the thoughts and beliefs that can keep you feeling stuck and looks at possible changes to perceptions of past events which can bring about changes to moods and behaviours.

Areas I work in are:

  • Separation
  • Assisting separating parents to make ‘contact’ and ‘day to day care’ arrangements for their children when they part
  • Helping couples work through breaches of trust and infidelity
  • Parenting issues
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Work based issues
  • Relationships with extended family
  • Anger
  • Violence and abuse
  • Grief and loss
  • Life direction
  • Adoption issues

Qualifications & Memberships

  • Bachelor of Arts in Education, Sociology, History and Maori
  • Certified Counsellor and Certified Clinical Supervisor
  • Completed the Externship in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples plus Core Skills Stage 1
  • Member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC)
  • Member of the International Centre Of Excellence for Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEFT)

Books I recommend:
Good Loving, Great Sex by Dr Rosie King,   Love in the Real World by Rhonda Pritchard,   Getting the Love You Want by Harville Hendricks,   Staying in Love: The Top Secrets of Great Relationships by Robyn Salisbury
